Gainesville residents will no longer need to take a trip to the doctor to grab some Opus Coffee.

The locally owned shop will open its newest location in Gainesville’s Innovation District later this month. It will be its first storefront outside of local hospitals, including Shands.

Bret Larson, who co-owns Opus Coffee with his brother, Tim, said he expects this location to be a different environment from the other fast-paced and smaller Opus locations.

“Even though we expect a lot of quick traffic in and out, we are also expecting a lot of people to stay to study, to socialize and talk and kinda meet up with other people,” Larson said.

The shop, which will be located at 800 SW 2nd Ave., will have its grand opening on Sept. 29 with live music, giveaways and specials, Larson said.

Opus’ new location will have seating for about 50 guests at the bar and tables. The space will feature wood accents and floor-to-ceiling windows that look out at the Innovation District.

“I think, especially in that area, there's been a lot of growth,” Larson said. “So we're kind of really excited about being in the middle of that growth.”

A variety of locally roasted coffee blends will be offered by the cup. Espresso will be brewed from a machine called Slayer, which no other coffee shop in town has, Larson said.

Opus will offer a menu dedicated solely to Slayer drinks, with names such as Dragon Slayer, Slay like Bey, Christian Slayter and Slay Queen.

Along with sandwiches, parfaits and fruit cups, Opus will sell homemade pastries from BakerBaker. The local family-run bakery also collaborates with Opus’ other locations.

Everything will be made in-house to ensure freshness and top quality, said Larson.

However, unlike Opus’ other shops, this location will serve beer and wine. Larson said he plans to stay open later for people in the nearby buildings who might want to grab a beer after work.

Opus Coffee will be open on weekdays from 7 a.m. until about 8 p.m. They are still solidifying the shop’s weekend hours, Larson said.

The coffee shop is also planning to open another location at 4th Ave. Food Park in October, Larson said. The food park will have a variety of vendors from around town such as Humble Wood Fire and Cilantro Tacos. It will also offer outdoor games and plenty of seating in the back.

“We’re working on a very unique concept that really has never been seen before in Gainesville,” Larson said.

Bela Miulescu, a 19-year-old UF materials science and engineering junior, said she’s looking forward to visiting Opus’ new location because she loves speciality coffee but often doesn’t have the time to brew it to her liking.

“I’m really excited to be able to go to a place that’s so close to campus that isn’t Starbucks or Dunkin’,” Miulescu said.
